Temple University historian Bryant Simon has taken particular slices of contemporary life, and used them to tell larger, social stories. He did this with his book on Atlantic City's Boardwalk, Boardwalk of Dreams: Atlantic City and the Fate of Urban America, and he does it now in his newest, Everything But the Coffee: Learning About America from Starbucks (University of California Press), for which he visits Starbucks' hometown. Ordered to join the Pacific Squadron in 1854, the U.S. Navy warship Decatur served in the Pacific until the eve of the Civil War. Lorraine McConaghy, historian at the Museum of History and Industry, relates some history of the storied ship—which includes a key role in the 'Battle of Seattle' of 1856—in her new book, Warship Under Sail: USS Decatur and the Pacific West (University of Washington Press). "In Warship Under Sail, McConaghy, has found a lens through which to examine anew the founding of Seattle. The vessel participated in the iconic 'Battle of Seattle,' that day-long skirmish during January 1856 between 'Natives' and 'non-Natives' that looms so large in historical accounts of the city." - John M. One of the year's last events, if not the final one, honoring the 2009 Centenary of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, or AYPE, today, with the authors of three major recent books concerned with this 'first Seattle World's Fair' speak about the AYPE's enduring legacy. Joan Hockaday's Greenscapes: Olmsted's Pacific Northwest (Washington State University Press) is the first full-length treatment of the work of John Charles Olmsted in this region. His many projects include the design of the AYPE site on the University of Washington campus. UW Visual Collections curator Nicole Bromberg's book, Picturing the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition: The Photographs of Frank H. Nowell (University of Washington Press), features the work of the Fair's official photographer, who documented its construction, workers, landscaping, and visitors. Stein and Paula Becker's Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition: Washington's First World's Fair: A Timeline History (HistoryLink/UW Press) provides a detailed, fully illustrated history of the fair and fairgoers, and of many political issues (women's suffrage) in the air at the time.

This evening is a celebration of Image Journal's first, full-length anthology, Bearing the Mystery: Twenty Years of IMAGE (William B. Eerdmans). And it's an opportunity to reflect on IMAGE's place as a magazine where some of our best contemporary writers and artists bring work informed by, or grappling with, religious faith. Among those expected to be here tonight are local contributors to IMAGE, starting with editor/author Gregory Wolfe. Also on tap are Robert Clark, Madeline DeFrees, and Mary Kenagy Mitchell.

Town Hall is Seattle's community culture center located in the historic First Hill neighborhood, on the edge of downtown. Town Hall showcases the community's cultural energy with diverse music, arts and humanities, civic discourse, and world culture programming. Housed in an historic Roman-revival-style building on the corner of 8th and Seneca, Town Hall opened in March 1999. Local, national and international programs and performances are scheduled year-round in the Great Hall and Downstairs at Town Hall.
