Traditions is a place to discover folk art products from cultures around the world, made available through fair and equitable trade relationships with low-income artisans and farmers from more than fifty countries.

Traditions is also a cafe and center for concerts, workshops and public forums; a gathering place for a community of interesting and involved people.

This site is about community - from our friends here in Olympia to the wider community of the world. Here you'll find useful information, stories and connections to others. The Olympia Poetry Network is sponsoring a poetry reading by Bill Ransom on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, from 6:30 to 8 pm, at Traditions Fair Trade and Cafe, 5th and Water Streets, Olympia. Ransom has published six novels, six poetry collections, and numerous short stories and articles. His poetry has been nominated for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He is currently Academic Dean of Curriculum at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. An Open Mike will precede the sponsored reading. Please bring a poem or two to share. Please keep your open mike reading to 3 minutes or less.

Allen Braden is the author of A Wreath of Down and Drops of Blood from University of Georgia Press and a fine letterpress pamphlet Detail of the Four Chambers to the Horse’s Heart from Peasandcues Press. He has received fellowships from the NEA and Artist Trust as well as the Emerging Writers Prize, the Grolier Poetry Prize, the Dana Award in Poetry and other honors. His work is forthcoming in Poetry International and three textbooks. He has taught at nearby colleges since 1997.

Open mic sign-up starts at 6:00. Reading starts at 6:30. Featured reader at 7:00. We will be in the upstairs portion of the Grange Café, a fabulous historic building with a wonderful space. You can get a full meal there, or simply order an appetizer or dessert. The Grange Café’s menu features many of the region’s best ingredients hand-delivered by local farms, cheese and dairy from local artisans, and the highest quality meat and game available. I can vouch for the deliciousness of their food and the warm welcome of their proprietor, Judy.


Nashira Priester

is a veteran producer of public broadcasting programs both in the Bay Area and here in Seattle. Longtime host of live radio broadcasts showcasing jazz artists of the last three decades and a half, Nashira was a founder of KPOO-FM community radio (San Francisco); Women in Film/Seattle and was a charter member of I.A.T.S.E. LOCAL 488 -Studio Mechanics of the Pacific Northwest. As a crew person, she works as a Set Decorator/Dresser/Buyer for films, both on features and independent projects: music videos and industrials. Her credits include work with Academy Award-winning director Alan Parker (“Come See the Paradise”), Nancy Savoca (“Dogfight” with River Phoenix) and Stephen King’s “Rose Red”.

BIO / Amalio Madueño is the former president of the Taos Poetry Circus and led their Mexican Bob's Poetry Camp. He has published widely in journals across the United States and Europe. His first full-length work, Lost In The Chamiso, was published in 2006. A new collection of his poems, Bosque Stream, is due out Fall 2010.

Distinguished Writer Series and Poetry Open Mic.
This monthly event features a Distinguished Writer and an Open Mic for poets, playwrights, short story writers, and others.

RASP, the Redmond Association of Spokenword (RASP), founded in January 1997, is the home of spokenword performance on King County's Eastside. We are proud of the range of artists and audience who have participated in RASP programs and the Reading Series over the past 11 years. RASP promotes written and spoken arts in East King County through inclusive education programming and performance events, and is a 501(c)3 arts organization.

Cat Rambo's work has appeared in such places as Asimov’s, Weird Tales, and Strange Horizons. Her collection, Eyes Like Sky and Coal and Moonlight, appeared in 2009, following her collaboration with Jeff VanderMeer, The Surgeon’s Tales and Other Stories, in 2007. She is the managing editor of the online publication, Fantasy Magazine. Laird Barron said of her work: "Cat Rambo possesses a rare and enviable eye for the sweet intersection of melancholy and bliss, of darkness and light.
